Departing employees must be 100% comfortable to be fully candid with their responses. The keys to creating this candour are:
 
 
1.
Distance. The person gathering the information should be a third party with no historical contact with the employee. Ideally he/she is external to the organisation.
   
2.
The option of anonymity. Employees should be provided with the option of providing their feedback anonymously. It is essential that they have complete trust that their anonymity will be protected.
   
3.
Two tiered process. If employees complete a written (or online) interview which is then interpreted by an HR professional, this enables the exit interviewer to probe into areas of interest, and elicit a fully candid response.
